Food meme, ganked from
forodwaith
As
forodwaith said, I will never qualify as a foodie or an amateur chef. I am a good baker, and what I believe used to be called a "good plain cook," meaning that six days out of seven I can produce a decent meal from common foodstuffs. I actually prefer cooking at home, because I can make sure there's no random tastes sneaking in. (On the other hand, I just order out for Chinese. Why bother cooking it when I have all of Chinatown just down the street, and they can do it better than I ever could?)
Despite this, like anyone who eats I have some very definite opinions about food.
Prepared foods I prefer to the real thing
Box mac'n'cheese, preferably Annie's.
Amy's frozen mac'n'cheese.
Instant oatmeal. It doesn't kick off my texture issues like real oatmeal does.
Prepared foods I'm convinced are just as good
Canned beans. So useful, I can sidestep my texture issues for them.
Chopped garlic - not just as good, there is a faint "canned" taste, but it is most useful when I'm pressed for time and the garlic is used as a complement and not as a primary flavor.
Frozen phyllo/pastry dough. I do not have the time or patience to deal with the persnickitiness of pastry dough when I can just defrost and unroll.
Canned salsa. The time & work investment required for homemade sometimes is too much. Same with hummus.
Packaged foods which I will never let past my threshold
Canned mushrooms. Blech and also ptui. Nast.
Bread mix. It's so easy to make dough from scratch! It really is!
Pre-made cookie dough. (points to above)
What do you think?
(Okay, now I'm hungry.)

Canned vegetables .... the only thing I LIKE is baby canned peas. LOVE them. LOVE Irish oatmeal.
I'm with you on the Phyllo -- but not the garlic. I can't stand the smell of the jarred stuff. But F. buys it and uses it.
Salsa. I will fly out there with some of the fresh-from-my-garden salsa this August. And I dare you to write that sentence again!
I am now sitting in the back yard staring at the place where the asparagus will sprout. Spring Fever times two!
XOXOXO
