The morning belongs to the runners.
Jul. 14th, 2004 08:45 amMost of the lakes in Minneapolis have two paths around them - one very close to the shore that is for pedestrian traffic only, and one a little further out that is for wheels - bikes, blades, boards. There's also a worn dirt path around the bike trail, so a lot of serious runners are often either on the bike trail itself or right next to it. This has been known to cause some friction between the two exercising camps, namely that the bicyclists resent having the runners on the path and the runners resent having to share space that they have had to themselves during the snowy months. For me, I try to stay to the extreme edge of the bike path or on the dirt trail, but I am not subjecting myself to the inner trail and its broken asphalt, Canada geese, and small children running amok.
(I am not discussing the people who walk along the outer ring. They should be fined and booted off to the inner ring with no ceremony whatsoever. Pfeh.)
In the mornings, however, there is no issue, because there are little to no bicyclists. Instead, the outer ring has runners upon runners, all nodding to each other as we go on our daily round. People sprinting, jogging, just plodding along, but all running. It's kind of cool.
-----------
Decent run today. Okay, slow run with constant low-grade knee pain, but I made it through and I decided to use the time to work on my form. I am going to the doctor about the knee, although I don't think there's much she can do until after the marathon. I just need to remember to ice & stretch, and remind myself that although I may think that I need to and can run more, I reallyreally shouldn't. I'm on the schedule I'm on for a reason. Dammit.
It's hard to get going properly in the mornings, but I don't know if I can get up any earlier to allow myself time to wake up. Maybe if I had cofee waiting....
