I had An Encounter whilst trying to order the necessary caffeine dosage to get through this particular day, so my thoughts turned to my faithful flist. Poll Time! (No, not Hammer Time. Poll Time!)

[Poll #785688]

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go bounce off the walls.

I'm pretty sure I'd call it "a shot or two of espresso topped with regular coffee."

What? I lack creativity before I have any caffeine in my veins!

Pfffft. If there's not a Clever Name, how do they know you're a Real Coffee Drinker? Hmmmm?

I had never heard of such a thing, and I've lived as an adult, mostly in the south and Ohio.

I don't think I'd like it.

It is caffeine crack in its purest form, and is therefore dangerous. Yet tasty, if you like your coffee bitter and twisted (hey, I like my men like that, why not the coffee?).

In the interest of full disclosure, I may have learned the term "shot in the dark" from an Alaskan (one of my co-baristas from back in the Starbucks days).

Hmmmm. Since I wasn't large into coffee until I hit college (and therefore the Midwest), I'd never heard any terms for said drink.

Also, your icon is perfect.

She may have picked it up in Chicago, then. Either way, my knowing the term is unrelated to my being from the Northeast. (Just so as not to skew the unbelieveably scientific results you're getting here...)

I think this icon came from a Borg conversation. Possibly in Minearverse.

Are you saying my poll's not scientific? Hmm? It is the way to truthiness, that's how scientific it is!!!

Alaska is where I know the term. I haven't actually had one. I normally get a single shot in a grande, and just the thought of a Shot in the Dark scares me.

This reminds me of when I was in LA and asked for a skinny latte and the barista looked at me blankly. That was when I first discovered regional differences in coffee jargon.

I was told by my friend who works at Starbucks that that drink with 2 shots of expresso is called a "Black Eye," although she doesn't like to use that name when the customer is black.

According to Wikipedia (that ever-reliable source):

Red Eye: a cup of American coffee with a shot of espresso in it. Also known as Shot in the Dark, Eye Opener or Depth Charge.
Black Eye: a cup of American coffee with two shots of espresso in it. Also known as Slingblade.
Dead Eye: a cup of American coffee with three shots of espresso in it. Also known as Blue Eye.
Crazy Eye: a cup of American coffee with four shots of espresso in it.
Blind Eye: a cup of American coffee with five or more shots on espresso in it.

I would call it "A Weak Version of Kyle's Coffee", because an old friend of mine drank something very similar. His, however, was 4 shots of espresso in a 16oz. cup of drip, with two shots of chocolate syrup added.

I think my heart seized up just reading that description. Oy.
