What's interesting about this meme for me is that as I've been burning all of my CD collection to my new shiny hard drive, I've run into a bunch of music from this era. I can't believe how much I used to spend on so-so music - that's something iTunes has really improved for me. I can go in and get the songs I want and not have to pay for the entire freakin' album.
This is a very poptastic list. Pearl Jam and Nirvana don't show up until 1994, but those bands (and The Pixies, Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, Counting Crows....) were what I was listening to when I was 18 - though I will always cop to a weakness for well-produced, danceable pop. I would love to hear people's opinions on the swing to uber-poppiness and then to gangster rap & grunge.
1993 Greatest Hits
1. What Is Love - Haddaway I don't remember if I liked it then, but it cracks my shit up now. I think mostly because of A Night At The Roxbury, but it's still funny.
2. Come Baby Come - K7
3. Hero - Mariah Carey Bleagh.
4. In The Still Of The Night (I'll Remember) - Boyz II men - Lost interest in the Boyz around 1991.
5. Have I Told You Lately - Rod Stewart Rod really needs to stop covering songs. I always like the original better. At least it's not fuckin' "Downtown Train". But now he has "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" out. Oy.
6. Can't Help Falling In Love - UB40 OTOH, I always enjoyed UB40's covers. I am full of contradictions, I know. I'd still rather listen to Elvis' version, though.
7. Dreamlover - Mariah Carey Again, bleagh.
8. Supermodel (You Better Work) - RuPaul Yay! Loves me some RuPaul.
9. Nuthin' But A "G" Thang - Dr. Dre I loves me some Dre, too.
10. Cryin' - Aerosmith - Martin says everyone likes marching songs ("I Get Knocked Down", "Float On", etc. Songs that one could march to. I think it's more that everyone likes a song they can bellow along to, and most marching songs fall into that. This is a bellow-able song.
11. Murder She Wrote - Chaka Demus and Pliers - ???
12. Shoop - Salt N Pepa Oh hells yeah.
13. A Whole New World - Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle - Meh. Cheesetastic.
14. Show Me Love - Robin S - This reminds me of doing Jazzercise with my mother. Sigh.
15. I'm So Into You - SWV - I think I owned this album. I preferred "Weak".
16. Hip Hop Hooray - Naughty By Nature - Everyone likes a marching song, and this one was danced to muchly.
17. Rhythm Is A Dancer - Snap! - This falls into that same category as "What Is Love", which I think primed me to love techno, electronica, and drums'n'bass.
18. All that She Wants - Ace Of Base - Poppy as hell, but fun.

20. Just Kickin' It - Xscape

27. Bad Boys - Inner Circle - Who doesn't know this song?
28. Whoot, There It Is - 95 South - I remember the clash between this song and Tag Team - the guys who did "Whoomp, There It Is" (# 49). I think Arsenio had both of the groups on to perform each song.
29. More and More - Captain Hollywood Project
30. Will You Be There - Michael Jackson - Wow, off of the Dangerous album. Not a great song, by any means, but certainly reflective of the time.
31. I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do that) - Meatloaf - NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! No Meatloaf!!!!!!!
32. T-R-O-U-B-L-E - Travis Tritt - I've told everyone about the country bar being the only safe place to dance in Fairbanks, because the GIs were scared of the roughnecks. This was popular then, so good memories.
33. I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) - the Proclaimers - Remember that whole "marching song" bit? Yeah. Love!
34. Knockin Da Boots - H-Town - Such a bad song.
35.Connected - Stereo MCs - Still fun.
36. Passionate Kisses - Mary Chapin-Carpenter - Meh. It's very sing-able....
37. Boom! Shake The Room - Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince - Also fun.
38. Baby I'm Yours - Shai
39. Love U More - Sunscreem
40. I'm Every Woman - Whitney Houston - She can definitely sing it, but this is not her song.
41. Sweat (A La La La La Song) - Inner Circle
42. Freak Me - Silk - Oh yeah. I remember dancing to this at school dances. Whee.
43. Reason To Believe - Rod Stewart & Ronnie Wood
44. Deeper and Deeper - Madonna - I like all of Erotica.
45. Another Sad Love Song - Toni Braxton
46. Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms - "Tell me do you think it'd be all right, if I could just crash here tonight. You see I'm in no shape for drivin', and anyway I got no place to go." Surprisingly accurate break-up song.
47. Can't Get Enough Of Your Love - Taylor Dayne - Taylor, you are no Barry.
48. Ooh Child - Dino - I know the song, but I don't remember this version.
49. Whoomp! There It Is - Tag Team - This one is definitely the winner out of that little battle
50. Two Princes - Spin Doctors
51. Informer - Snow - This song still cracks my shit up. Not good, but good memories.

54. Man On The Moon - REM - LOVE THIS SONG. Still.
55. Cat's In The Cradle - Ugly Kid Joe

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M. The rumor was that this song was written for Kurt Cobain.
Dazzy Dukes - Duice I didn't really like this song, but it reminds me of my friend Michele coming up from San DIego to visit me in LA.
