1. How old do you wish you were?
Old enough to know better.

2. Where were you when 9/11 happened?
At my temp gig. Went home not long after the first tower fell.

3. What do you do when vending machines steal your money?
Insult the parentage of said vending machine.

Inside the cut: favorite erogenous zone, Jacuzzis, secret weapons, and other questions of breathtaking inanity! )
e_juliana: (gone country)
(Side note: I keep listening to Lucero's new album - Rebels, Rogues, and Sworn Brothers - and OMGWOAH with the Bruce influence. Also OMGWOAH with the love.)

I quote: This is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with five song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I'll give you a letter. You post this blurb in your journal along with your list.

[livejournal.com profile] aimeejmc gave me "F". I'm trying to pull entirely from my work iTunes, which is limited, but in the best of ways.

"Far Away Coast (Live)", Dropkick Murphys
a) punk. b) strong Irish influence. c) song from a soldier's perspective.
Lyrics to Far Away Coast  )

"Feel Alright", Steve Earle
I love the outlaws. What can I say?
Now some of you would live through me
Lock me up and throw away the key
Or just find a place to hide away
Hope that I'll just go away

"Five Dollar Bill", Corb Lund Band
It's just a cute, bouncy, story-telling song about bootleggers and outlaws, set to a simple background.

"Folsom Prison Blues", Johnny Cash
You're seriously asking me why I put this on my list?

"Footprints On My Ceiling", Social Distortion
Mike Ness' voice is raw and filled with regret and wonderment at a relationship gone seriously wrong.
Lyrics to Footprints On My Ceiling  )

Honorable mentions:
"Father Of Mine", Everclear
"Five Feet High And Rising", Johnny Cash
"Flesh & Blood", Johnny Cash

(Hmmm. Almost entirely punk & country. Sense a theme?)

Also-

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your seven songs.

Dude. I can't do 7. I had a hard enough time getting it down to a CD-length mix, which is 16. So, here's my list of Songs What Juliana Really Likes Right Now. (Anybody want the mix, lemme know. It's not in the order posted, obviously.)

"Down to the River to Pray", Alison Krauss
"LA Song", Christian Kane
"Apocalyptic Modified Blues", Corb Lund Band
"Muhammad Ali", Cory Branan
"Willie, Waylon and Me", David Allan Coe
"Cadence To Arms (Live)", Dropkick Murphys
"(Ghost) Riders In The Sky", Johnny Cash
"Seven Days", Kane
"I Can Get Us Out Of Here Tonight", Lucero
"Looking At the World from the Bottom of a Well", Mike Doughty
"Take 'Em Away", The Old Crow Medicine Show
"Starry Eyed Surprise", Paul Oakenfold
"Hips Don't Lie / Bamboo (2006 FIFA World Cup Mix)", Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean
"Footprints On My Ceiling", Social Distortion
"I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow", The Soggy Bottom Boys
"Hard Core Troubadour", Steve Earle

Fiday Five for July 14, 2006. (Happy Bastille Day!)

1. What about you makes you unique?
Um... Me being myself? Seriously, everyone's unique.

2. What aspect of your physical appearance do you think makes you stick out from the crowd?
How I present myself. Not entirely original, but eye-catching.

3. What do you always have with you while out in public? (for example, earrings, purse, wallet, watch, etc.)
Rings, earrings, painted nails.

4. Is there anything about your body that you think isn't normal?
What is normal? Seriously? I'm amazingly short-waisted, my knees are shot, I've got scars like woah.... But my skin is really soft, and my eyes are pretty cool.

5. What are you complimented on (looks, smarts, anything) the most? Why do you think that's the case?
Looks. I think it's because we're a very visual species, I have a strong look, and most of my meatspace interactions are in settings that don't allow for the showing off of spicy brains. Not that I have them lately, but whatever.

All right, y'all. I'm bored. Here's lyrics from 20 songs iTunes played me. Guess the song title and artist (no fair searching). All comments are screened.

My iTunes selection at work is deliberately limited. I suppose that'll change once I get my iPod....
e_juliana: (impulse)
Whoa!

1. Do you play cards?

A bit, but I'd rather play dice.

2. Do you have any rings on your hands?

8 at all times. 5 of them are very personally significant, the other 3 are merely pleasing to me.

3. Would you describe yourself as innocent?

BWAHAHAHAHA! Hee! Well, okay. Maybe a little. I tend to think of it as more cluelessness than innocence, because I am rarely shocked at what people can do once I find out they're doing it.

4. What do you think of chivalry?

Meh. I prefer etiquette. Politesse. Acknowledging everyone's humanity.

5. Have you seen The Thomas Crown Affair?

The remake, and lordy is that a fun movie, with one of the best sex scenes ever.

ION, my music selections are starting to get a little schizophrenic. I'm flipping back and forth between Underground Hip-Hop and Country on Launch.com. The underground hip-hop is heavy on the flow (De La Soul, Digable Planets, Jurassic 5, Atmosphere, etc.), so it's easier to just let it wash over me. The country will often send me into fits of frothing rage what with the prevalence of over-produced pop-country, but my happy is unrivalled when a good one comes on.
e_juliana: (finding the truth)
If you had to choose one genre of music to listen to for the rest of your life - one and only one - which genre would you choose and why?

Me, I'd choose blues. There's an amazing range of styles, and it's the one music that consistently speaks to me. Almost any other genre that I regularly listen to owes a big debt to blues (and soul). I know blues - I can't play it by any means, but my body knows it and responds accordingly, moving along and getting right in that groove.
e_juliana: (sheep)
But it kind of called out to me:

Is it me or you that I'm afraid of?

1. What's missing from your life?

My friends from MN. A romantic relationship.

2. Do you like to get drunk?

Does a fish swim? Yes, but not to sloppiness. Just to the happy bit.

3. Have you ever kissed a stranger?

Hells yeah.

4. Do you smoke?

Not cigarettes.

5. What makes you happy?

My friends. Love. French fries. Music. Theater (when it's good). That flow you get into when you're working - you know, when everything's happening as you need it to. That one.

T.S. Eliot is indeed one of my favorite poets.

A woman drew her long black hair out tight
And fiddled whisper music on those strings
And bats with baby faces in the violet light
Whistled, and beat their wings
And crawled head downward down a blackened wall
And upside down in air were towers
Tolling reminiscent bells, that kept the hours
And voices singing out of empty cisterns and exhausted wells.

50 Things you're dying to know. Or maybe just intensely curious. Mildly interested? )
e_juliana: (calico jack)
Hi there. Spent all day yesterday miserable at work, crawled into bed when I got home at 5:30 and spent the night alternately shivering and sweating, not leaving my bed except for necessities like bathroom and food. Made into work today, promptly felt like I was going to pass out, tried to grit through it, gave up at 8:30 and tried to go to Urgent Care. The UC listed on my benefits handbook? Not open. The next closest one? Not open. Finally decided that going home and suffering sans diagnosis was better than passing out in front of the H&M on Post Street, so I caught a cab home, hitting my bed at 9:30 a.m.

I hurt. Everywhere. Well, actually, just my spine, but from the base of it up to the base of my skull, with attendant steel bands wrapping around to the front of my head. My lymph nodes are swollen, as are my tonsils (so eating anything is fun. Viva la smoothies!). In spite of that, I have no fever (not even when I'm sweating), and there's no white spots anywhere in my mouth. The UC Diagnosis line I finally got to was baffled. I managed to get to the health foods store just down the way and load up on natural remedies, and one of my friends is going to run to Walgreen's for me when she gets home.

Guess what I still need to do, though? That's right, clean my house in prep for madre's arrival tomorrow. Pfeh. I might just do a couple loads of laundry, tidy up, vacuum, and call it quits.

A quiz I meant to post a few days ago.... )
e_juliana: (pwned!)
As [livejournal.com profile] forodwaith said, I will never qualify as a foodie or an amateur chef. I am a good baker, and what I believe used to be called a "good plain cook," meaning that six days out of seven I can produce a decent meal from common foodstuffs. I actually prefer cooking at home, because I can make sure there's no random tastes sneaking in. (On the other hand, I just order out for Chinese. Why bother cooking it when I have all of Chinatown just down the street, and they can do it better than I ever could?)

Despite this, like anyone who eats I have some very definite opinions about food.

Prepared foods I prefer to the real thing )

Prepared foods I'm convinced are just as good )

Packaged foods which I will never let past my threshold )

What do you think?

(Okay, now I'm hungry.)

HUH???

Went up to the Golden Haven Hot Springs Spa in Calistoga with [livejournal.com profile] debg, [livejournal.com profile] pix_kristin, and [livejournal.com profile] fashionista_35. Deb and Barb's generosity made it possible for me to go, and I am profoundly grateful for it. (Side note: I had never seen the words "Motel & Spa" used on the same sign before.) We all had spa treatments - I got a cheapy, the mini-facial, but it was still nice. The best bit was the mineral water pool and spa that was open to all the guests. The hot tub was lovely, but the pool.... oh my. It was bathtub-warm, and the water had so many minerals in it that I could float with minimal effort.

I'm not a good swimmer. I can do the old-lady frog kick, I can do the side stroke, and I can do the back stroke. Anything else - anything that requires my face going in the water - triggers a panic reflex in me. It took all I had to swim underwater for a paltry few seconds. Strange for a water sign, eh? However, in this water, I felt safer. I could allow myself to float on my back and do the minimum necessary to keep my face out of the water. I still couldn't relax all the way, but I could let myself be, for precious seconds at a time.

That's something I've not been able to do for almost four months now - let myself just be. Actually, probably longer, considering there were more than a few emotional storms all the way through 2005. I didn't quite accomplish it, and Sunday was majorly fraught (tears and everything! Yay!), but I know there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Somewhere.

~~~~~~
For the past 6 years, I watched the Oscars at my friend Karen's house. It's always a big to-do, with people dressing up and food competitions and trivia and prizes. It really hit me hard - the fact that I couldn't be there this year. It was a highlight of my year, every year. It kind of dovetailed with the fact that I'm starting to feel forgotten in MN and invisible here. I know people miss me there, and I know I have people here. But it's the larger slipping away & anonymity that I'm having problems with. And the loneliness. Hoo boy, the loneliness. Ouch.
I have a hard time letting go, this is true. I need to let go of MN and try to keep the friendships there at the same time. 'Tis hard.
~~~~~~

Need to be around normal people again. Must to get involved with a production, pref. one that doesn't take me forever and a day to get to, hence am limiting search to SF directly across the bay. Palo Alto v. nice, but rather far at 11 p.m. Have set up audition and have sent out resumes. Have contacted those whose names I have been given. Next step, volunteering at big theaters and at Theatre Bay Area events. Yes.

(And yes, I called theater people normal. You make your own normality, and mine involves being able to tell stories of actors launching baby dolls into the bassinet, and having said bassinet move two feet, and the hysterics that came after. "Regular" people understand that it's funny. Theater people understand that it's hilarious. I like being admired, but I miss being grokked.

~~~~~~
Thinking I should take a martial art. There's a hapkido dojo up the road from me - anyone have an opinion?
~~~~~~

The very pretty [livejournal.com profile] truejavachik lent me her copy of S1 Babylon 5. I'm having a hard time getting into it - it's very.... Trekky. I'll try a few more eps before I give up, though.

~~~~~~
I think I want all of them.
~~~~~~

Finally, a quiz! Who wants to live forever? )
e_juliana: (leap)
1) When does liking someone a lot become loving that person?

As always, that's a grey area. I guess when they become supremely important to you, beyond the love of a friendship, when you start thinking of the future of the relationship. I can't tell you what the tipping point is, I just know when I approach it.

edit: I read the first question as referencing eros, not necessarily agape. It takes a lot for me to fall in love with someone, but it doesn't take much for me to love them, if we bring agape into the question. I love many people. Even more if I've been drinking.

2) Is there a job you would do for free, and is it your current job?

Yes, and hell no. I like this job, but I wouldn't do it for free.

3) What is one person/thing that inspired you to take action of some sort?

One thing that inspires me to take action is theater. It's the dominant theme in my entire life.

4) Though you might not believe in it, would you like fate to exist?

No. I despise the idea that I have no agency in my life, and that is what I always read fate to be (comes from reading too many Greeks, I suspect). I like the idea of a concordance in the universe, of things coming together properly, but I hesitate to call that fate.

5) What's the kindest thing that anyone has ever done for you?

Many people chipped in, even when they couldn't necessarily afford it, to make it possible for me to move out to San Francisco and begin a new life. I will be forever grateful and in their debt. Their generosity is stunning and humbling and beautiful. And, odds are, if you're reading this? You helped. So thank you.
